3D laser scanning

3D laser scanning is a modern and increasingly popular method of performing land surveying measurements. It allows us to obtain multi-million sets (clouds) of points in RGB colours of specified values.

3D scanning allows us to accurately and quickly transfer the dimensions of an object to a computer screen. The most commonly used type of laser scanning is terrestrial laser scanning.

We use modern methods of data acquisition: terrestrial 3D laser scanning and low-altitude photogrammetry with the use of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) and close-range terrestrial photogrammetry.

These technologies allow us to quickly provide customers with a large amount of information in three-dimensional data exchange formats (point clouds, 3D models). Each technology has its limitations, with the most important being the problem of access to the object of interest. In the case of combining techniques, there are practically no objects that we would not be able to inventory.

Photogrammetry is a branch of science and technology that deals with reconstructing the three-dimensional shapes and sizes and mutual positions of various types of objects in a given area, using photographs.

Airport reconstruction and expansion

Using traditional surveying methods, our company supervised the implementation of an investment project involving the reconstruction and expansion of an airport in Gliwice.

The first stage included adapting it to the needs of exclusive airport use with reference code 1B (with the possibility of transformation to 2B) along with the construction of necessary technical infrastructure and the fuel system.

The low-altitude aerial photogrammetry technique was used to carry out the task, utilizing non-metric photographs.

The technology involves processing digital images into a 3D point cloud, which is a spatial, finite representation of the terrain consisting of points with X, Y, Z coordinates and the color values of each point (pixel).

Our clients have already realized this, thanks to the use of laser scanning during the modernization of the Ożarów cement plant. Several design errors were detected at an early stage, which allowed for costly modifications to be avoided during the construction phase

Photogrammetric and laser scanning with 3D thermal measurements

The laser scanning technique was used to carry out the project, which involves collecting a significant amount of points (several million points per station) within the range of the laser scanner.

In addition, a thermal imaging camera was used as an overlay, allowing for temperature data to be collected in addition to the point cloud data. 14 scanner stations were set up in the field to complete the project.

The survey was carried out using low-altitude photogrammetric technique with the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The measurement was conducted for an area of approximately 65 hectares as specified in the project, along with the creation of a situational-altitude map.

The aim of the research conducted in this project is to locate the combustion zones and determine the intensity of thermal phenomena occurring within the coal waste dump located in the area of Magdalena Street in Bytom.

Research scope:

Low-altitude photogrammetry with the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) within the surveyed area
Laser scanning of the landfill combined with infrared temperature measurement within the thermally active area
Processing the point cloud data to create a geometric representation of the surface of the landfill site along with a temperature distribution map
Measurement of internal temperature (depth of 1.0 m) of the landfill in selected points
Measurements of gas concentrations (O2, CO2, CO, CH4) inside the landfill atmosphere

The results of calculations based on low-altitude photogrammetry were then compared with measurements using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Differences in volume between the first and last measurement sessions were compared for each measurement technique.

The verification of inventory levels is a very important issue nowadays. With the development of low-altitude photogrammetry technology (popular drone surveys), measuring the volume of material storage on open spaces is not a challenge. However, closed warehouses pose a problem where drone flights may be challenging.

To address this issue, a laser scanner can be used to measure inventory levels quickly and safely while maintaining high precision and repeatability of results.

Tarnowskie Góry - archetypal inventory of the synagogue square

Archaeological inventory of the ruins of a synagogue demolished during the II World War. Built in 1864, the synagogue, designed by the architect Constantin von Koschützky, was burnt down in 1939. During renovation works carried out in 2021, well-preserved foundations were exposed at the market place now located there. As a result, the works were stopped and an archaeological inventory was ordered. Fragments of metal lamps, door handles with locks, facade stucco and roof tiles were found on the spot. Our company has created descriptive and photographic documentation using the low-altitude photogrammetry technique with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

Any changes to the construction and installations involve financial costs at many facilities. Thanks to the use of laser scanning and modern measurement techniques, we obtain a dense point cloud that reflects a 1:1 representation of the measured objects. As a result, we are able to accurately replicate measured objects and in the case of new projects, avoid costly revisions during construction.

Nalot fotogrametryczny w celu planowania prac konserwatorskich

W 1902 roku w Mikulczycach powstał ratusz gminny. Budynek został wzniesiony z cegły, na planie prostokąta, w stylu eklektycznym z wieloma elementami secesyjnymi. Bryła jest wzbogacona o ryzality z loggią i wykuszem oraz szczytem o falistych spływach, mansardowym dachem. Reprezentacyjności dodaje gmachowi ośmioboczna wieżyczka, przykryta cebulastym hełmem. Kamienne obramowanie drzwi i okien nadają budowli akcent secesji. Pod koniec lat 30. ratusz gminny uległ przebudowie, następnie mieściła się w nim przychodnia lekarska a obecnie jest on ponownie remontowany.

Na potrzeby planowania prac konserwatorskich został wykonany lot fotogrametryczny dronem. W procesie przetworzenia pozyskanych zdjęć uzyskaliśmy model 3D, który można zobaczyć na platformie Sketchfab:
